Timber Merchants

Oil Painting Beckenham Place
This imaginative painting of John Cator junior's Beckenham Place was by the late Mary McInally who wrote the history of Minshull House, A Hundred Years Remembered.

Their father, John Cator, at least by 1748, had established the business of John Cator & Sons, timber merchants at Bankside in Southwark, London. In about 1762 he retired to Bromley, Kent but when he wrote his will he declared that he was still in perfect health although he had passed over his business to his eldest son, John, junior, in whom he had complete confidence. It was not just the timber business that made the Cator fortune but also their financial genius, especially that of John junior.
